About the Role
We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our New Product Development (NPD) team—someone who’s excited to design innovative medical products and work hands-on from concept to commercialization, with capacity for professional growth into engineering management.
In this role, you’ll use SolidWorks and Design Thinking principles to turn ideas into market-ready products, working side by side with our commercial, engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to bring each concept to life.
At UMF Medical, we use the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to stay focused, aligned, and accountable—so great ideas don’t just stay ideas; they become products that matter.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop new medical products using SolidWorks guided by Design Thinking principles.
- Collaborate across departments—Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing, Sales, and Supply Chain—to ensure each design is manufacturable, safe, cost-effective, and user-friendly.
- Translate customer insights and clinical feedback into intuitive, high-performance product solutions.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles to ensure efficient, repeatable manufacturing processes.
- Develop and execute test protocols for performance, safety, and reliability.
- Lead design reviews, support prototype builds, and ensure smooth transitions into production.
- Select materials and suppliers, evaluating tooling, cost, and manufacturability options.
- Balance creativity and discipline, managing multiple design projects from concept through launch.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software)
- Experience in sheet metal design (preferred)
- Familiarity with medical device standards (IEC/UL 60601)
- Experience with FEA, material selection, and tolerance analysis
- Comfortable with ERP systems, Excel, and cross-department collaboration tools
Mindset & Soft Skills
- Team-first attitude and a passion for collaboration
- Strong problem-solving and creative thinking skills
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
- Committed to continuous improvement, learning, and growth
Education & Experience
- BS in Mechanical Engineering (preferred) or equivalent practical experience
- 3–5 years of hands-on engineering experience
- Experience in medical devices or regulated industries is a plus
